What Are Prelinguistic Skills & Why Do They Matter?
Before some children use mouth words, they develop prelinguistic skills- the early communication behaviours that happen before spoken language emerges. These skills help children learn how to connect, express themselves, understand others, and participate in meaningful interactions long before they say their first words.
Prelinguistic skills are essential for all children πneurotypical and neurodivergent. For some children, these foundations develop naturally through everyday play and routines; for others, they may emerge differently or need a little extra support. Both pathways are valid. π
By nurturing these early skills, we’re strengthening the building blocks of communication, confidence and relationships. Words grow from connection — and connection starts here.
